# Rate limits

> Requests-per-second limits by account type, and what happens when you exceed them.

Rate limits are per API key, counted per second.

| Account | Requests per second |
| - | - |
| New account that has never topped up | 1 request every 5 seconds |
| Any account that has topped up, and Starter / Builder / Pro subscriptions | 20 |
| Scale subscription | 50 |
| Business subscription | 500 |
| Higher limits (up to 1,000) | [Contact us](mailto:hello@twitterapi.io) |

When you go over the limit, the API returns `429 Too Many Requests`. Wait briefly and retry; see [Errors](/errors) for a retry example.

## Tips

* **Spread requests out** instead of sending bursts. A steady 15 requests per second is safer than 30 requests every 2 seconds.
* **Use one key per account.** Limits are per key; running many processes on one key shares the same limit.
* **Need real-time tweets?** Polling [advanced search](/api-reference/endpoint/tweet_advanced_search) with a time window works well and gives you full logs. Tweet filter rules (webhook / WebSocket) are also available.
